Tilelab Grout and Tile Sealer Review

 October 13, 2020

By  Dale Keese

Few things can give a homeowner more of a headache than having to remove oil-based stains on grout.

Traditionally, the DIY methods of removing oil-based stains from grout involve one or more of the following; acetone, mineral spirits, or brake cleaner. Those products are highly toxic, and it will require you to scrub for hours.

There’s no guarantee that any of them will be effective in removing oil from your grout. There are other things to consider, such as how long it’s been since the oil seeped in, and how much. Why don’t you save yourself from the hassle simply by applying a grout and tile sealer that prevents the oil from leaking in, in the first place?

Tilelab Grout and Tile Sealer was formulated to save you time and prevent headaches in cleaning and maintenance. Its extremely economical water-based formula is low in odor, designed to effectively resist most oil and water-based stains. Other sealers in the market often leave residue on the surface which can be tough to remove. Not this one.

Tilelab Grout and Tile Sealer can be used on a variety of tiles including terra-cotta, porcelain, quarry, concrete, brick, Saltillo, as well as natural and masonry stone. Use it to keep the grout and tiles found in the interior and exterior of your home protected against nasty oil and water-based stains.

Its world-class water-based formula makes application simple. Tilelab Grout and Tile Sealer penetrates thoroughly into the surface so that it resists stains from deep within. After application, difficult maintenance and cleaning become a thing of the past. It can be applied up to 48 hours after grout installation, though immediate is ideal for the best results.

Tilelab Grout and Tile Sealer has a low price point when you compare it to similar products, yet it’s been found to perform even better.

Features:

  • Economical formula; a little goes a long way
  • Protects grout and tile from stains and discoloration
  • Easy to apply, deep penetrating sealer
  • Effectively removes common oil and water-based stains
  • Low-odor
  • Water-based formula

How To Use Tilelab Grout and Tile Sealer

Make sure to use protective clothing and gear when applying Tilelab Grout and Tile Sealer. These include a face mask (to prevent inhaling the product) and chemical-resistant gloves; an apron would also help in ensuring it doesn’t get on your clothes.

To cover up to 300 square feet, you’ll need just a quart of this product, while a gallon can efficiently cover from 800 up to 1,200 square feet. Porous surfaces will require 1 quart for 50-100 square feet of the surface, and 1 gallon will cover 200 up to 400 square feet.

Keep in mind that new tile and grout installations should be allowed to cure for 48 up to 72 hours prior to application.

Surface prep requires that it’s clean and dry; grout and tiles should also be free of any other sealer, finish, or wax. Use a new mop to generally apply the sealer. Other alternatives include a sponge, brush, or lambswool applicator. After the initial coat, let it dry for 5 minutes then immediately wipe it down with a dry cloth to get rid of excess solutions. When the first coat has been thoroughly absorbed, then it’s time to apply the second coat with the same procedure.

If you are working on a very porous surface such as Saltillo paver or clay, this may require 1 or 2 more applications.

Test to check if the surface has been completely sealed by placing a few drops of water on its surface 2 hours following application. If you notice that it penetrates, just apply an extra coat. Should you observe that residue is present on the surface even after drying, use a sponge and some water to wipe it off an hour after application. Let it dry for 2-3 hours.

Once the application is done, wash your hands and tools with soap and water immediately.

What Others Are Saying

Based on customer reviews, many homeowners have given the Tilelab Grout and Tile Sealer five stars. They rave about its efficacy, affordability, and ease of use.

More importantly, perhaps, customers have taken note that this product works as it should. You’d be surprised how many sealers in the market advertise that they can do the job but actually can’t. They have also noted that when Tilelab Grout and Tile Sealer gets on tiles, it does leave a mild shine though it’s matte on grout.

A few customers were disappointed with how it performed on Saltillo, though. But do take note that there are specific instructions for sealing on Saltillo pavers since it requires more coats to work well.

Buying Advice

Tilelab Grout and Tile Sealer is available in many home depots, but why go out to find it when you can order it from home? Amazon and other online retailers sell this product and many more at a good price.

Final Verdict

Grout sealing shouldn’t be treated like an afterthought; not unless you want to be the homeowner who learns the hard way that grout must be sealed especially when oil stains are involved. Tilelab Grout and Tile Sealer does the job and it does it well, without being expensive.
